New Guidance from HSE
This guidance consists of three components:
![]() |
HSG258 - Controlling airborne contaminants at work Detailed guidance for designers, installers, and examiners of LEV. |
![]() |
INDG408 - Clearing the air Guidance for employers on buying and using LEV. |
![]() |
INDG409 - Time to clear the air A pocket guide for users of LEV. |
These documents are all available from HSE (www.hse.gov.uk/lev); copies of INDG408 and INDG409 are also available from WorkPoint - email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for a pack.
Key new requirements within these documents include:
- The need to maintain a logbook detailing planned and unplanned maintenance; annual 'Thorough Examination and Test'; and known issues.
- The need for suppliers to provide a commissioning certificate detailing initial configuration, tests completed, and other relevant information.
- The requirement for LEV systems to include an indicator allowing the operator to check visually whether the system is performing as designed.
The requirement for an annual 'Thorough Examination and Test' is unchanged although all systems more than one year old should now show a sticker detailing the date on which the system was last tested - or indeed whether it has failed.
New systems
All new AirBenches comply fully with HSG258. Every unit is supplied with an integral filter pressure loss gauge providing a quick visual indicator for filter condition, full user manual and logbook, and commissioning certificate.
Existing systems
HSE have advised us that they will focus initially on new systems; however over time their expectation is that existing systems will be updated to cover all requirements in the new guidance.
We offer several packages to bring older AirBench installations into line with the new standards.
